I was talking to a good friend yesterday about the way God has been blessing us recently. We discovered that He has been blessing us both in similar ways. The difference: Satan used his powers of manipulation and deception to turn mine into something other than God intended. As we discussed our situations, why she is able to continue enjoying what God has given her when I cannot, we came to an amazing new understanding of God's blessings and how they are to be enjoyed. This is what we talked about:
Imagine yourself seated at the feet of God. Your hand is extended toward your Father, palm up, and you expectantly wait for Him to place something in your hand. You trust that your Father, who knows the desires of your heart, will give you something good, something that will bring you joy and bring Him glory. He looks at you with so much love and affection, of course He will bless you with good things! He reaches out and places something in your open hand. You bring it near to your face to inspect the treasure you have been given. The blessing brings you so much joy! How wonderful it is to be loved by the Creator of the universe! Immediately, you sing to your Father songs of genuine thanksgiving for His love and faithfulness. God is delighted by your authentic worship. Then, you begin to inspect the blessing again, and you wonder what it's for and how long it will be yours. It is just so beautiful, you really don't want to ever part with it! It is so good, why would God ever want you to give it up? As you marvel at the goodness of the gift, you begin to forget that, ultimately, while the blessing is for your enjoyment, it is intended to bring glory to your Father. The temptation to close your fingers around the blessing is just too much for you, so you give in. The blessing is shrouded in darkness; you've blocked out God's light. In your attempt to take control of the gift, you have allowed Satan to turn it into a curse in the darkness. But all is not lost! God is waiting to rescue you from the misused blessing. It hurts as He opens up your tightly-balled fist, and your heart breaks when He removes the blessing-turned-rotten from your hand. So here you sit, broken and sad before the throne of your Father, ashamed and embarrassed. But the Father offers grace and forgiveness, and you take it with genuine gratitude! As you worship your Father, who is infinitely good, loving, and full of grace, palm outstretched, He does something unexpected. In your hand, He places a new blessing, greater and sweeter than the one before. This time, you keep your palm open, trusting God to teach you how to enjoy it. You know that, as long as God intends you to have the blessing, it will remain in your hand without your help. You also understand that God gives and takes away, not to leave you empty handed, but to make room for the greater things that are yet to come.
